AR-GOD

AR-GOD: musicians- folklorists from Udmurtia (Maria Korepanova, Nikolai Anisimov) and Estonia (Toivo Sõmer) cooperating to interprete archaic songs and melodies in sensible way, still keep in touch with fenno-ugrican music world.

Ethnomusic project “AR-GOD” was formed in 2014 by two Udmurt singers- folklorists Maria Korepanova and Nikolai Anisimov and Estonian multi-instrumentalist Toivo Sõmer. The band performs polyphonical Udmurt, Beserman and Estonian songs and the experimental music based on traditional finno-ugric songs and tunes. By the new interpretation of authentic music the band enriches the finno-ugric musical heritage and transfers it into world music space.

The syllables "AR-GOD" are culturally significant for both Northern and Southern Udmurts. "AR" means "a calendar year" and is also Turkish for Udmurts. "GOD" is often present in the folk music of Northern Udmurts and Besermans. If you put those syllables together, AR-GOD stands for calendar.
